I, like you, have been disappointed by many diet products ranging from appetite suppressants to fat burners, carb blockers, diet foods, etc. One thing that I have been using and seemed to help me get over the hump in my weight loss program has been the fat-burner pills from dietdirect. I began taking the pills after I had already lost 5 lbs. It seemed like at that point, no matter how many miles I peddled on the stationary bike every day that I was in gridlock as far as losing any more weight. I started taking their fat burner pill “Healthy Weight” and it seemed to help me to achieve my current weight loss of 15 lbs. (10 more than when I started them). I selected those pills in particular because they are ephedre free and if you have done any research, you know that is a good thing if you care about your overall health in general in addition to losing weight. And since I am an honest person, I am more than happy to tell you that I not only take the pills and have seen the results myself, but believe in them so much that I signed up as an affiliate. That means when you buy them, I get a small percentage. So you can kill two birds with one stone….burn fat and lose weight, and help out a fellow human struggling through this economy!

In addition to the fat burner pills, they have everything from diet cookies, soups, diet patches, and what they call a weight-loss starter kit.

Brent A. Bauer of the Mayo Clinic had the following to say about appetite suppressants, Hoodia in particular:

Although hoodia is marketed as an appetite suppressant that aids in weight loss, there’s no solid evidence that hoodia is effective.

Hoodia — whose scientific name is Hoodia gordonii — is a succulent plant that grows in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Interest in its use for possible appetite control and weight loss was piqued because of reports that native Africans use hoodia to reduce hunger during long hunts. However, there’s no solid evidence from scientifically sound clinical trials that hoodia is an effective tool for weight loss.

Still, some dietary supplement manufacturers market products containing hoodia as a way to suppress appetite and aid in weight loss. Herbal and dietary supplements don’t require approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before going on the market. But the FDA has warned some manufacturers of hoodia products to stop making unsubstantiated and misleading claims about weight loss. Evidence about the safety of hoodia is also lacking. And there have been past reports that products promoted and sold as hoodia supplements don’t actually contain any hoodia.

You can read it all here.

Is weight loss eluding you like it is many of us? I myself have spent the better part of the last 5 years trying to lose weight with a combination of diet pills, food regimens and exercise. The problem with me has always been that any weight loss has been temporary, until I finally realized I HAD to change my diet and get some exercise.

Diet pills – Millions to choose from, but what works? And more importantly, are diet pills healthy? The market is flooded with appetite suppressants, weight loss pills, energy pills, etc. that all claim to help you lose weight. I would recommend staying away from the latter, especially if you have heart issues. While I have tried all of them to no avail, I am excited about the new pills on the horizon. A California company hopes to have a new weight loss pill on the market by late 2010. Patients in clinical trials lost an average of 3 to 10 percent of their weight after a year. I would love that….if I could also keep the weight off.

Anyway, I have lost 15 lbs over the last 6 months, and am holding strong. My goal is to lose 15 more over the next 6 months, and KEEP IT OFF. I welcome any of you to comment and check in once in a while to exchange advice and motivate one another.

Since reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan and watching Food Inc. I have in many ways adapted new rules for eating. Typically I watch a documentary and I get the message and move on. I read a self-help book and get it, but usually move on. However, with In Defense of Food, something real happened. I made changes in my diet that made sense to me.

In the past I would go to Weight Watchers meetings and assume that any food with the words “free” “low” or “diet” in them meant weight loss and in turn would mean good for me. What has changed for me, is that even if foods can make you lose weight it doesn’t mean they are good for you. Let’s face it, I could lose weight eating four snickers a day and two apples. I could lose weight eating three slices of cheese pizza and salads. I could lose weight eating two hamburgers and fries a day with diet soda. This doesn’t mean it is good for me.

So when I starting thinking about it, I realized that Michael Pollan is right, our country is obsessed with nutrition and eating, yet we are the most obese. I observe what women eat, it’s what I do. And I notice really strange habits to stay thin. Only eating one meal a day (usually fast food) or staying away from bread like it is the plague, or avoiding dinner, or not eating all day and then binging at night.

Sometimes I’ll have someone offer me microwave popcorn and follow with “it’s the fat free kind!” or state that the salad has fat free dressing or mayonnaise or whatever in it. I see a stocking up on “diet food” to feel in control. Force feeding ourselves fat free yogurt filled with high fructose corn syrup and some form of fiber to make it healthful and yet diet friendly.

There has been an absence of real food in the American diet for over 30 years now. If we aren’t eating diet fake food, we are eating processed convenience fake food. One or the other. Diet food is gross. It just is. There is nothing good about diet soda, fat free diary, or bread made in a factory. To me, there is no difference between a loaf of sara lee whole wheat bread and wonderbread. Same factory, same chemicals, same injections of fiber or vitamins. same same same. Which is why I find it so weird that so many of us are anti-bread. Bread at the supermarket, is not good and I get avoiding that, but what about real bread?

Bread that is made with flour that isn’t processed, or full of the latest super-nutrient? People have been eating and surviving on bread for centuries. People without weight issues or food issues in general.

What about evil salt? did you know that you actually need the minerals in sea salt to survive? The processed salt in most snack foods combined with the other crappy ingredients make it bad.

I know I sound like I am on a high-horse about all of this, and I am not perfect. This weekend I had a halloween party and did not want to spend a lot of time cooking, so I didn’t. I made black beans, rice, caramel dipped apples and had more candy to feed a whole town of tricker-treaters. And I ate and enjoyed. But, in general, when someone tells me something is good for me because it has fiber in it, or because it is “low fat”, “low calorie” or ”high protein” I just zone out. That train has left the station.

I believe in real food, local food, good food. I believe in fat. I believe in homemade bread. I believe in spinach salads with hard boiled eggs and local tomatoes. I only eat meat when I know the origin. I am still fat because I eat too much. And that is what I’m working on— eating less. Not eating more “diet” food.
